The start of Voyages of DiscoveryVoyages of Discovery was previously known as the Discovery World Cruises. It was started in 2003 by Gerry Herrod, who was the chairman of Orient Lines, Pearl Cruise, and Ocean Line Cruises. The objective of Voyages of Discovery is not just to take the passengers to great destinations through the water, but also to give all the amenities and comfort of conventional cruising on a classic ship.
Amenities onboard the Voyages of DiscoveryThis cruise line has most of the amenities of the larger ships like the two Jacuzzis and two pools. The sun deck of the ship also has a retractable magrodome roof. In addition, there are four lounges, spacious wooden decks, six bars, another alternative dining restaurant, shops, library, internet, movie theater, performance and lecture theater, card room, spa and an exercise room. The thing to be noted here is that there are no casinos on Voyages of Discovery, only few slot machines in one of the bars. During winter, dance hosts also grace the ship. Discovery is more about comfort and amenities rather than luxury and this is evident in the cabins as well. They are comfortable but not lavish. Another thing that will stand out in this ship is that fact that unlike the modern ships where all the cabins are identical, the layout of the staterooms differ within the categories in this ship. In short, the Voyages of Discovery offer basic accommodation without the frills--no cabins have balconies.
Passengers: Voyages of Discovery is ideal for those passengers who are more eager about educational talks and destinations rather than a luxurious facility. It has been seen that the older-than-average group of people are interested in this cruise line.
Destinations: The destinations covered by Voyages of Discovery are South Africa, The Falklands, Indian Ocean, South Georgia as well as the Chilean Fjords, India, South America, and the Persian Gulf. These routes are covered during the period of November to April. From May to September, the destinations traveled to are Harwich and Portsmouth to the Baltic, Norwegian Fjords, Greenland, and Iceland. From September to November, Voyages of Discovery travels to the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Black Sea. The itineraries range from 8 to more than 100 days (Grand Voyage of Discovery) and the passengers get free stays in the first city and the last port.
Voyages of Discovery onboard experience
Dining: Voyages of Discovery offers a wide choice of food onboard. Breakfast is served in the " al fresco" on the Sun Deck. It can also be ordered in your cabin. Lunch is more of an open-sitting arrangement in the "al fresco" restaurant while dinner is served in two sittings. The timing depends on the day's schedule.
Entertainment on Voyages of Discovery is more subdued. You can enjoy a dance to the music of the ship's orchestra, visit the Hideaway bar for a quite drink, or take part in a quiz program. During the day talks on informative subjects, art classes, music recitals, films, etc are some of the activities the passengers engage in.
